The Somerset parish of Thorne, or more correctly Thorne-Coffin, is situated less than 3 miles north west of Yeovil. It was little more than an agricultural hamlet in the middle of the 19th century, but hosted its own race meeting on Tuesday 11th March 1845 on fields owned by Mr Preston in the near vicinity of the hamlet. The 3 mile course was over good hunting ground and the race was a match between Mr Daly’s The Cure and Mr Moore’s Magna Charta. The race was particularly well attended by local farmers in the area and at the outset Magna Charta set off at a steady pace 2 lengths ahead of The Cure. This order was maintained for the first 2 miles, but two fields from home The Cure’s jockey Daly gave his mount his head and a good race ensued. At the last fence The Cure made the better jump and went on to gain victory by a comfortable 2 lengths.
